Research in the field of nutrition plays a fundamental role as it allows us to study and expand our knowledge of the effect that nutrition has on digestive health, the quality of life of people in their later years and on environmental health.
The future of nutrition revolves around these three fundamental pillars: the study of the microbiota as a fundamental part of the digestive system; the health of the planet as a place of production and consumption of food; and achieving quality aging of the population by improving its diet .
In all of them, “dieticians-nutritionists play a fundamental role, since we are the health professionals with the most knowledge about the effects of food,” explains Mª Cruz Manzaneque, secretary of CODiNuCoVa and researcher.
“OMNIVEG study” is one of the most relevant recent studies published in relation to these aspects. Miguel López Moreno (@nutreconciencia),a nutritionist and researcher with a PhD in Food Sciences, has carried out“the evaluation of the effect of a Mediterranean diet with a higher intake of vegetable protein, thus displacing that of animal origin, among healthy and physically active university students”. The peculiarity of the public to which it is addressed responds to the intention of observing the effects that food can have on the population without pathologies and how it is capable of preventing the worsening of health in the long term.
“With the results we have obtained, we can confirm what we suspected: in just three weeks there was a very noticeable decrease in the risk factors for diseases such as hypertension or inflammatory bowel diseases. This is due to a decrease in cholesterol levels, among other things. A clear demonstration of what research in the field of nutrition means ,” explains López Moreno.
Following results like this, Mª Cruz Manzaneque explains that “ in general, as a population, we have a very marked tendency to act when we already have a pathology or when age imposes its physical limitations. However, research like this shows that what we eat has an impact on the prevention of diseases, in this case digestive diseases, and that improvements in aging and quality of life can be encouraged.”
